of money amounting to about $400, but I cannot recollect the exact amount.
Directly I received the money I handed it in the hands of Mr Ng Wasting, Chinese Clerk at the Magistracy, and gave him certain directions as to its disposal; there were instructions, I regret to say, were to some extent misunderstood.
During the interval I had to meet some debts which I had contracted. These debts were ultimately paid from the money in the hands of Mr Ng Washing but with the distinct understanding that it was to be replaced in a day or two. During this time I was not in direct communication with Mr Ng Washing as I was invariably working in the Justice's Room with Mr Seth (the 3rd Clerk) in order that we might bring up the "Statistics of Crime", called for by the Government.
There is no doubt that some misapprehension existed between myself and Mr Washing, but under any circumstances, I must admit that as Custodian of the money the onus of the blame should fall upon my shoulders.
